Glass vs. PET Packaging
In today's packaging market, people often compare glass with PET. Both can achieve a crystal-clear appearance visually, but they have very different physical properties, cost structures, and applicable scenarios.
1. Weight & Logistics Costs
(1) Glass: Heavier compared to PET. The weight of a standard 50ml glass bottle is usually several times that of a PET bottle of the same volume. This significantly increases logistics and shipping costs.
(2) PET: Lighter compared to glass. For brands that mainly rely on cross-border e-commerce or require long-distance shipping, choosing PET can save a considerable amount of logistics costs.
2. Durability & Safety
(1) Glass: The biggest risk of glass is that it is fragile. There is a risk of breakage during filling, transportation, and consumer use. If your product is mainly used in bathrooms, showers, and other slippery environments, glass can easily become dangerous if dropped. To avoid breakage, glass packaging also requires additional cushioning materials during transport, which further increases shipping costs.
(2) PET: Compared to glass, its greatest advantage is that it does not break easily. PET is a high-strength thermoplastic, and it will not shatter even if dropped from a height, making it suitable for personal care products and large-capacity packaging for daily use.
3. Barrier Properties
(1) Glass: Glass hardly reacts with any chemicals, and its permeability to oxygen and moisture is zero. For formulations containing highly active ingredients, 100% pure essential oils, or formulations highly prone to oxidation, glass is the most suitable packaging material.
(2) PET: PET's barrier properties against oxygen and moisture are already considered very good, but they are not completely impermeable. Over time, small amounts of oxygen may still penetrate. PET cannot withstand long-term exposure to 100% pure essential oils or strong organic solvents, as it may easily deform or leach. It is more suitable for regular lotions, creams, hydrosols, and low-concentration serums.
Compared to glass bottles, PET bottles have weaker chemical resistance, but they are less prone to breakage and are also cheaper.
